Workshop: Visualizing Sustainability with a Spatial Lens

February 13, 2025 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm EST

This session will explore how a spatial perspective can be used to visualize and address sustainability issues, highlighting where they occur and who is affected. Attendees will learn about publicly-available tools and projects that leverage geographic data to examine sustainability challenges related to the environment, economy, and equity. With the democratization of authoritative data on topics such as environmental justice, social vulnerability, climate and economic equity, and more, participants will have access to a wealth of information covering aspects like transportation, public safety, affordable housing, air quality, income, and greenspace access. During the session, participants will apply a macro-level spatial lens to real-world scenarios, working in small groups to identify and use the most relevant tools and data for interpreting social, environmental, and economic issues.

These accessible tools empower students and community members, making them ideal for classroom discussions, group projects, funding proposals, presentations to stakeholders, and planning activities. Participants will engage in hands-on exercises, framing sustainability questions, selecting the right tools and data, and developing solutions. This experiential approach offers practical skills in utilizing spatial data to educate and inspire action on sustainability challenges.

  1. Understand how a spatial perspective can illuminate sustainability issues related to environment, economy, and equity.
