Workshop: Utilizing Sustainability Pedagogy for Faculty Development
April 10, 2025 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm EDT
Achieving a sustainable future requires learners to deeply engage with sustainability issues, applying their knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes to drive change. To fulfill their role in preparing future leaders, higher education institutions must shift from traditional, transmissive teaching methods to transformative, student-centered approaches that foster critical thinking and action. This virtual workshop is designed to guide faculty in adopting the Burns Model of Sustainability Pedagogy, an adaptable framework that integrates key learning theories for teaching sustainability content to undergraduate and graduate students. Participants will be introduced to the model’s five dimensions, which aim to create learning experiences that empower students to transform their perspectives and take positive action. Through interactive activities, participants will collaborate on developing practical strategies and receive a playbook with mini-lessons that can be immediately implemented in their courses. This hands-on approach ensures that faculty leave the workshop equipped with tools to facilitate transformative, sustainability-focused learning.
Learning Outcomes:
- Understand the principles of the Burns Model of Sustainability Pedagogy and its application in course design.
- Explore the shift from transmissive to transformative learning approaches for sustainability education.
- Develop skills to create student-centered, action-oriented learning experiences that encourage critical examination of worldviews.
- Collaborate with peers to design practical, sustainability-focused teaching strategies.
- Gain access to a playbook of mini-lessons and resources to implement transformative pedagogy in their own courses.
