As Seas Rise, Can Literature Be Our Life Raft?

With climate-triggered disasters and war plaguing our planet, how shall we live, how shall we write, and how shall we teach? Dr. Krista Hiser, Director of the University of Hawaii System Center for Sustainability Across the Curriculum, will host a conversation and readings with Mary Fifield and Kristin Thiel, co-editors of Fire & Water: Stories from the Anthropocene, and Claudia Monpere McIsaac, poet and senior lecturer at Santa Clara University, to explore the purpose and promise of climate literature here and now.

Krista Hiser, Sustainability Curriculum Coordinator, University of Hawaii Office of Sustainability
Dr. Krista Hiser is Sustainability Curriculum Coordinator for the University of Hawaii Office of Sustainability, where she facilitates change management, interdisciplinary dialogue, and professional development opportunities for faculty to design, update and transform courses to integrate sustainability across the curriculum. She serves on the advisory board for the Sustainability Curriculum Consortium (SCC) and on the Steering Committee for the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). She is also Professor of Composition & Rhetoric at Kapiʻolani Community College. Her favorite course is “Decade Zero: Understanding the Science & Rhetoric of Climate Communication,” an interdisciplinary learning community.
She has published on community partnerships, service-learning, organizational change, professional development, post-apocalyptic literature and climate fiction.
University of Hawai‘i System is one of the regional AASHE Centers for Sustainability Across the Curriculum.
