Alternative grading offers a lot of potential for improving equity in the classroom and ensuring students achieve key competencies for sustainability. However, getting started can be intimidating. In this workshop, participants will learn more about different alternative grading options and engage in activities to rework a single assessment or an entire course to introduce the principles of alternative grading. We’ll look at starting points like developing single-point rubrics and using two-stage exams, all the way to complete revamps including specifications grading and ungrading. Learn about specific approaches to communicating with students about the grading approach and strategies to work around the restrictions of the learning management system. We’ll also talk about options when you experience pushback from your administration. At the end of this workshop, you will have some concrete actions to take to improve equity and refocus students on learning over grades.

Tai Munro, Assistant Professor, Sustainability Studies, MacEwan University Tai Munro, PhD has designed and taught multiple sustainability-related courses in general sustainability, education, and sciences. Recognizing that sustainability will take everyone’s participation, Dr. Munro’s goal is to engage all learners through flexible learning environments and equitable assessment practices. She agrees with educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom who wrote that “learning mastery is theoretically available to all, if we can find the means for helping each student” (1968, p. 3). With this in mind, she aims to enable students from all backgrounds to develop sustainability competencies and become leaders for sustainability in their current and future careers.
