FreeEstablishing a sustainability program is new, exciting and often arduous. Sustainability professionals, especially in higher ed, however, have proven resilient, resourceful and audacious despite lacking resources and organizational buy-in. At San Mateo County Community College District, an organizational shift to sustainability is still underway, but progress across three campuses is solidifying. As it does, it’s influencing the largest higher education system in the world. Learn how an individual formed a team and how the team is driving change at the organizational and institutional level.

Joseph Fullerton, San Mateo County Community College District, Energy and Sustainability Manager Joe Fullerton applies his passion for accessible, high-quality education as Energy and Sustainability Manager at San Mateo County Community College District. Here he has modeled a comprehensive suite of programs that generate synergistic academic and operational benefits by using the Campus as a Living Laboratory. In addition to his role at SMCCCD, Joe is helping accelerate Education for Sustainable Development efforts throughout the California Community College system, is an advisor for Peninsula Clean Energy and Faculty Associate of Communications for the Masters in Sustainability Leadership program at Arizona State University. |

Isabel Parés, San Mateo County Community College District, Zero Waste Associate Isabel Parés is the Zero Waste Associate at the San Mateo County Community College District, currently working on sustainable procurement and promoting equity in sustainability. Isabel is an environmental scientist born and raised in Puerto Rico, and an advocate for climate action and science-based public policy solutions. Her professional and personal interests focus on how to make human-nature interactions more sustainable. Until 2018, Isabel served as the Coordinator for the USDA Caribbean Climate Hub managing partnerships, stakeholders, conducting research and outreach activities to promote climate resilience in the agricultural sector. |
