Composting Food Scraps Campus as Lab Community of Practice Webinar

January 9 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm EST

Campus as Lab Community of Practice webinar

The Saskpolytech Sustainacuisina Project, funded through CICan (Colleges and Institutes Canada), addressed real-world sustainability challenges through student-led applied research and experiential learning in On-Site Composting. This presentation will share our experiences composting food scraps from the school cafeteria using Vermicomposting and In-Vessel Composting systems during the project and discuss how on-site composting has continued at the school following the project’s completion. We will explore the ongoing benefits of On-Site Composting for colleges and institutes, present our toolkit to help institutions establish their own On-Site Composting systems, demonstrate how the project supported the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and share insights from transitioning the project into a sustainable long-term initiative.

Speakers:

Keri Sapsford

Keri is a passionate advocate for sustainability and community-driven solutions. As the founder of Compost Corner, a local food scrap composting company, Keri has championed innovative food scrap composting initiatives that bridge the gap between environmental stewardship and practical waste management. With experience in designing and implementing on-site composting systems-including Vermicomposting, In-Vessel Composting, and Aerated Static Pile systems-Keri has supported businesses, institutions, and communities in adopting sustainable practices. In partnership with Saskpolytech, Keri has contributed to applied research projects like the Sustainacuisina Project, where she guided student research efforts to turn food scraps into valuable compost, meeting real-world sustainability goals. Since completing the project, Keri continues to foster community connections, promote environmental education, and advance practical solutions for a more sustainable future.

Carley Makuch

Carley is a Saskpolytech Resource and Environmental Law student who is passionate about environmental sustainability and creating a better and more sustainable world. Carley has taken on the vermicomposting project for 2024- at Saskpolytech’s Prince Albert Campus to ensure food scraps from the School Cafeteria are being turned into soil building worm castings rather than creating methane and leachates at the landfill. Carley played a significant role in the success of the 2023/2024 Sustainacuisina Composting research project and creation of the On-Site Composting Toolkit. She continues to ensure success of the project by voluntarily supervising the efforts of students who wish to give some of their own time towards the daily work of composting with worms for Saskpolytech’s Prince Albert Campus.
