As colleges and universities simultaneously promote both sustainability and study abroad, it is vitally important to ensure that these initiatives are working in harmony. Infusing sustainability principles and practices into study abroad programs can enable us to maximize the benefits of study abroad while also generating meaningful responses to the extra carbon emissions generated by international travel. Cross-cultural learning combined with sustainability education can help students to become ecologically-minded citizens prepared to work for sustainability in our world of diverse cultures and worldviews. In this webinar, the three presenters will set out three models for how to combine sustainability education and study abroad. The first centers on a cyclical, exploratory approach to travel that creates a renewable landscape of study that mentors new faculty and attracts a larger pool of travelers. The second involves a program that provides resources and guidance to leaders of abroad programs so that they can infuse sustainability principles and practices into their program regardless of its substantive or disciplinary focus. The third is an integrative, sustainability-focused, “traveling classroom” model that combines extensive on-campus preparation with an extended study trip. Following the presentations, there will be ample time for questions and discussion, with the aim of generating productive movement forward in this important area of sustainability work in higher education.

Presenters

	Kenneth Foster, Chair of the President’s Sustainability Council, Concordia College Ken Foster is an Associate Professor of Political Science who also serves as the chair of the Global Studies Program and chair of the President’s Sustainability Council. He teaches in the areas of comparative politics, environmental studies, and global studies, focusing on issues concerning democracy, sustainable development, environmental politics, and China. At Concordia, he has spearheaded work to promote campus sustainability and to infuse sustainability-related content and activities into the curriculum.
	Linda Petee, Sustainability and Risk Management Coordinator, Delta College Linda’s role is to seek collaborative projects linking students with opportunity to add to their understanding of a sustainable society. She serves on the campus International/Intercultural Travel Committee, the AASHE Advisory Council, and is a member of the Implementation Liaison Leadership Circle for implementing campus and community innovative sustainability and climate action strategies. She received the DeVinney Endowed Teaching Chair for contributing to the development of an exploratory model for study abroad.
	Jason Brozek, Professor, Lawrence University Jason Brozek is Associate Professor of Government and Stephen Edward Scarff Professor of International Affairs at Lawrence University (Appleton, WI). He also serves as director of Sustainable China and chair of Global Studies. His scholarship addresses cooperation and conflict over international transboundary freshwater resources.
