Best practices for transdisciplinary and experiential education for sustainability can be directly tied to creating just and equitable change by connecting the greatest challenges on the planet with the plan of action for people, the planet and prosperity. If we truly hope our efforts are intended to leave no one behind, these educational practices need to make their way throughout the curriculum at all institutions. Sustainability across the curriculum programs continue to exhibit high value through the AASHE STARS reporting tool and in their return on investment on campuses and in our systems of higher education

Join three members schools of the AASHE Centers for Sustainability Across the Curriculum network in an experiential virtual workshop where participants will experience hands-on activities and walk away with lesson plans that can be used with diverse groups of students, faculty or staff at their institutions to educate for and about sustainability. Rooted in best practice, high impact pedagogies, these effective and adaptable activities will provide participants with ways to help their audiences define sustainability, introduce and connect the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals to their work or areas of study and connect to the curriculum in and out of the classroom.

Given the recent switch for many institutions to virtual classes and meetings, we will include details about how these activities can be transitioned to a virtual environment while maintaining the interactive nature of the activities for participants. This will include tips on how to use Zoom and other online platforms to inspire collaboration, contribution and facilitation.

Participants will come away from this workshop with lesson plans and personal experience with each of the activities showcased by the presenters. They will have time during the workshop to discuss with presenters and other participants specific needs for their classes, workshops and institutions to ensure that they leave the workshop with inspired ideas that they will have the skills to apply immediately.

Kelly Grant Purvis, Associate Director of Sustainability Programs, The Shi Institute for Sustainable Communities

Kelly Grant Purvis is the Associate Director of Sustainability Programs at The Shi Institute for Sustainable Communities at Furman University. She works with student fellows, faculty affiliates, university staff, and local community organizations to educate and inform on a wide variety of issues related to sustainability. She spent the first decade of her professional career focused on sustainable architecture and green building working with local governments, non-profits, and private companies. Since coming to Furman, she has worked to engage the local community and Furman’s campus more fully in the center’s programming by expanding programs and broadening the reach of sustainability. Kelly Grant is also an artist who works in glass and ceramic and uses her work to facilitate conversations and promote awareness of sustainability. In her downtime, she is most often found wandering in the woods and swimming in lakes with her family and her dog.

Lindsey Lyons, Assistant Director, Center for Sustainability Education, Dickinson College 
Lindsey Lyons came to Dickinson College in 2011 as the Assistant Director of the Center for Sustainability Education. Lyons completed her B.S. in biology from Lynchburg College and a M.S. in environmental education from Southern Oregon University. As a certified K-12 teacher, outdoor school creator and experiential education advocate, Lindsey understands that education is key to a sustainable future and believes that colleges and universities hold a unique position to engage students in experiential learning. Her work at Dickinson is striving to create greater clarity, commonality and deliberateness of purpose to our efforts to infuse sustainability across our curriculum, co-curricular programs, global education programs, campus life, operations and civic engagement. Currently, Dickinson carbon neutral and working to engage students, faculty, staff, alums and family in accessible sustainability-related behaviors with positive impacts on carbon.
