Webinar: Intersectional Sustainability and Student Activism

In recent decades, universities have made significant progress toward environmental sustainability and have likewise tightened their budgets and restructured economic models in the name of financial sustainability. However, institutions of higher education have failed to address issues of social sustainability and social injustice, many of which are increasing in number and severity on college campuses. Our research takes a student activist perspective on these issues, suggesting that a comprehensive and intersectional approach toward university sustainability (with particular re-affirmation of the social sustainability pillar) can empower students and their allies, raise awareness about the causes of these issues, and allow a more constructive environment for collaborative approaches and policy formation on college campuses.

Lilly Dennis, Educator, Southwestern University Lilly Dennis graduated from Southwestern University in 2018 with a B.A. in Environmental Studies with a minor in Feminist Studies. After graduating she went on to serve in the American Conservation Corps, working in parks and forests along the East Coast. She now works at the Austin Nature and Science Center, educating children and providing care for the animals on exhibit. Her favorite animal to work with at ANSC is Pogo, a charismatic Common Raven who enjoys eating the blueberries she hides for him. |

Keara Hudler, Political organizer and Volunteer coordinator, Southwestern University Keara Hudler graduated from Southwestern University in 2018 with a B.A. in Environmental Studies with Spanish and Economics. She is now a political organizer and volunteer coordinator. When not working on elections, Keara spends most of her time hiking or eating with her cat. |

Nataley Ford, Legal Secretary, Southwestern University Nataley Ford graduated from Southwestern University with B.A. in Environmental Studies. After graduation, Nataley began working as a Legal Secretary for the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, with aspirations of advancement into Air or Water Permitting. During the weekends, Nataley enjoys spending time outdoors with her dog Mango as well as trying new art projects. |
