Webinar: Vertically Integrated Projects for Sustainable Development (VIP4SD)

As we enter the Decade of Action on these global goals, the VIP4SD program provides a platform for HEIs to leverage the unique access they have to the enthusiasm, idealism and talent of their undergraduate populations in tackling the grand global challenges of today. The program offers undergraduate students the opportunity to gain academic credits by working in partnership with their peers from different disciplines and year groups, and with experienced researchers and academics, on ambitious research projects that tackle the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The webinar will share the University of Strathclyde’s experience of embedding research-based education for sustainable development within the undergraduate curricula through the use of an innovative pedagogy called Vertically Integrated Projects (VIP), which originated at Georgia Institute of Technology.

Dr. Scott Strachan, University of Strathclyde Scott M. Strachan received his BEng-hons and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Strathclyde in 1995 and 2005 respectively. Since his research appointment within the Institute of Energy and Environment (Inst EE) in 1997, he has conducted and led research projects with leading UK energy companies, mainly focusing on the areas of plant condition monitoring, asset management and intelligent systems applications for power systems. He has been active in energy for development research since 2006, and is a founder of the Electronic and Electrical Engineering (EEE) Department’s outreach Gambia Solar Project, a staff-student initiative delivering off-grid solar PV systems to rural schools and health clinics. His research has focused on developing off-grid and electric cooking solutions for rural communities in The Gambia, Malawi, Rwanda and India. He is also the co-director of the university’s flagship and global award-winning Vertically Integrated Project for Sustainable Development program, which coordinates undergraduate and post-graduate research and teaching around the UN Sustainable Development Goals. |

Dr. Louise Logan, University of Strathclyde Louise Logan completed a PhD in English at the University of Strathclyde in 2019. She is the Programme Coordinator for Strathclyde’s Vertically Integrated Projects for Sustainable Development programme, and since 2020 has been a Learning Enhancement Officer in Strathclyde’s Education Enhancement directorate. |
