Leveraging Sub-Meter Data as Feedback to Engage Community Members and Save Energy on Shoestring Staffing and Funding

April 19, 2017 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm EDT

Free

Macalester College has leveraged no-cost and open-source solutions to provide feedback to community members while, simultaneously, informing facilities about energy-saving opportunities to further advance its sub-metering initiatives. Whether you find that you have no utilities sub-metered, too much data, or something in between, Macalester College is delighted to share its leadership efforts with AASHE members to advance Sustainability across Higher Education.

Kurt Miller, Sustainability Project Coordinator, Macalester College

As a Saint Paul native, having grown up not far from campus, Macalester College is a perfect fit. Kurt was led to Macalester several years after graduating from St. Olaf College. He now coordinates sustainability initiatives throughout campus on a part-time basis while fulfilling another part-time role in Information Technology Services; having also previously worked in Facilities Services. He brings great experiences to Macalester including the spearheading of the first federally funded, new construction project in the United States to provide geothermal environmental conditioning and domestic hot water to seniors in an urban affordable-housing setting. This achievement is a reflection of his approach to the sustainability field: leveraging technology – in whatever form – is a key to sustainability success.
