In 2008, Smith introduced an orientation session about sustainability to teach incoming students how to minimize their environmental impact, dedicated a 200-acre tract of woodland as a living laboratory for teaching and research about the environment, and hired its first environmental sustainability director. Judy Walton is the Acting Executive Director for AASHE. She was a founding member and Executive Director of Education for Sustainability Western Network (EFS West), which expanded and transitioned to AASHE in 2006. She served as the first executive director of AASHE. She has had a long-standing interest in sustainability, reflected in both her academic work (she played a key role in campus sustainability efforts at Humboldt State University), and her green building consultancy work in Washington state in the mid-1990s. She has delivered presentations to campuses and businesses, assisted campuses with strategic planning, and participated in or helped organize national webcasts on sustainability and higher education. Judy holds a Ph.D. in geography from Syracuse U., an M.A. in geography from San Diego State U., and a B.A. in political science from UC San Diego. |
